Reverse Osmosis Water Filters – More than Just a Filter

If you thought all water filters were the same, think again. Not all water filters are the same, in fact, some water filters are more powerful than others. The perfect examples of powerful water filters are reverse osmosis water filters. These water filters are extremely powerful and are also used by the military in combat situations. You see, when soldiers are out in the field, they do need water to drink, which could come from a variety of sources.

They use reverse osmosis water filters to cleanse the water and make it safe for the soldiers to drink. Now that filtered water has become a part of everyday life for many "civilians", they too are looking for powerful ways to cleanse their drinking water, creating something far more healthier than what generally comes out of their tap.

Because reverse osmosis water filters are so powerful, they come with both advantages and disadvantages, much like everything in life pretty much. As an under the sink type of water filter, it takes care of removing a variety of chemicals and other harmful substances. It comes complete with a pre and post filter, eliminating harmful substances such as nitrates, cysts, trihalomethanes, salt, sulfates, pesticides, chlorine, giardia, lead, copper, and arsenic. The osmosis part of reverse osmosis water filters is the fine membranes used for water filtration.

What happens is that the system will first push the water into the pre-filter section of the system. Once in this section, contaminants and sediments are screened and filtered out. After this it will enter the post-filter section of the system, this is where any chemicals are removed, providing a healthy form of drinking water.

What you pay for these types of filters will depend on what model you purchase. For home use, it is generally cheaper than for military or business use, however it could run you a good deal of money still. While cost could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the model and usage, reverse osmosis water filters come with two distinct disadvantages.

First, it will waste far more water than it produces. In fact, for the most part up to four gallons of water is wasted for every one gallon of filtered water it produces. Second, with these types of water filters, you will be losing necessary minerals in the water. This is because the system is so powerful it will even eliminate helpful minerals, which may mean taking supplements.
